What the CDL Training Program Consists of

•    Self-paced study with Trucking: Tractor-Trailer Driver Handbook/Workbook by the Professional Truck Driver Institute
•    Classroom instruction with demonstrations and computer based interactive training
•    Range driving time
•    Fifty hours of Hands-On On-the-road driving time
•    A total of 220 clock hours of training

The Class A CDL Academy Difference

•    Students will not only receive top notch training, but will also receive extensive instruction in resume writing, interviewing skills, on-the-road living tips and tricks and financial planning
•    Fully licensed instructors with real-world commercial driving experience
•    Work with real equipment and receive excellent classroom training
•    Not only study for the Utah Commercial Driving Test, but also meet, if not exceed, minimum requirements under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations
•    Upon completion of course, receive an industry recognized certificate of completion
•    Student will not have to commit to any trucking company – before or after schooling

Training Program Description

Course Title: Commercial Driver License Course
Course Objective:  After successful completion of the course (written CDL Permit and Driving skills course) the graduate will be prepared to apply for a Commercial Driver License.
Length of Course: 220 clock hours NOTE: Training is scheduled as follows:
Monday through Friday (7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.) – 4 weeks
60 Hours - Self-Paced Home Study
80 Hours - In Class Training
40 Hours - Range Driving
40 Hours - Road Driving

•    Students will be required to read chapters on their own prior to each class date
•    All chapter material will be reviewed and further discussed
•    Open book mock quizzes will be administered after each day’s instruction is complete
•    Closed book quizzes will be administered periodically and at the end of the classroom training portion of the program
•    Students will be required to complete necessary worksheets when assigned

Commercial Truck Driver Training - 220 Clock Hours

Description:  The purpose of the program is to produce a safe and competent truck driver. Upon successful completion of this program, graduates will be eligible for employment as entry-level drivers and will require additional supervised driving hours before being able to safely operate tractor-trailers as solo drivers. The specific objectives of the truck driving program are listed below.


Objective: Upon completion of the training, the student will be able to:
1.    Demonstrate knowledge of tractor-trailer operations
2.    Describe Department of Transportation and Interstate Commission rules and regulations
3.    Perform range and close quarter maneuvering
4.    Perform day and night driving operations
5.    Detect and identify preventive maintenance problems on tractor-trailer units
6.    Describe cargo liability and security regulations
7.    Pass the commercial license examination and obtain the commercial license
 

Facilities and Equipment

Class A CDL Academy’s school location houses our administrative offices and large, comfortable classrooms.  The Academy maintains field driving courses where students will be able to practice coupling/uncoupling, backing and docking.  The Academy provides equipment for Commercial Driver License Licensing (CDL) testing.  All equipment is operated under the licensing of the state of Utah.

Academy Calendar

•    Classes are held monthly throughout the year. Students are encouraged to apply for acceptance to their program of choice at any time of the year
•    New full-time classes start on the first and third Monday of every month, unless it falls on a holiday observed by Class A CDL Academy
•    Full-time classes consist of 220 Clock Hours

*Clock Hour is equal to 50 minutes of classroom instruction, lab, range, behind-the-wheel, road driving and self study.

Academy Holidays

Class A CDL Academy observes the following holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day
Any lost training time will be made up during regularly scheduled class times.

Class Schedules

•    Weekday classes begin at 7am and end at 6pm Monday through Friday. Morning, afternoon and lunch breaks are scheduled each day
•    Additional road time will be scheduled in the evenings to accommodate the required nighttime behind-the-wheel training skills
